Sweep in Spearfish

Taking the sweep after another pair of wins in Spearfish, Colorado Christian earned their wins today after a couple big innings against the Yellow Jackets.

GAME 1: W 8-4

Black Hills took claim of the first run on the board after scoring a single run in the bottom of the second, but the Cougars followed up with 6 runs to take the lead in the top of the third. Megan Gordon got the team rolling by starting off the inning with a double, advancing to third on a wild pitch, and making it home off of a Hanna Farmer single. Farmer then stole second and advanced to third after a single from Kendall Yasui, who then also stole second. With another pair of singles from Stephanie Day and Charlotte Romero, Farmer, Yasui, and Day all made it home. Kacie Burger then hit a triple to bring home Romero, and was brought home after a sac fly from Caitlin McCarthy to end the inning with a final score of 6-1.

The Yellow Jackets scored a few more runs but were unable to ever take the lead back. For the final three innings the Cougars held Black Hills to just 3 batters each time. Colorado Christian scored a pair of runs in the final inning after back to back doubles from Stephanie Day and Charlotte Romero – Day bringing home Kendall Yasui who singled and Romero bringing home Day.

Jennifer Romero earned the win on the mound after pitching the entire game and tallying 8 strikeouts, giving her an overall record of 13-5.

GAME 2: W  9-0

Maintaining their momentum from the previous game, the Cougars were able to keep the Yellow Jackets from scoring in the final game. They were quick to score this time and got a single run in the first after Kendall Yasui singled, stole second, then made it home after Charlotte Romero singled up the middle.

Colorado Christian scored again in the third after a pair of runs to put them up by 3. Hanna Farmer and Charlotte Romero were the two who crossed the plate after Farmer singled and Romero was walked, followed by Kacie Burger hitting a 2 RBI triple. Shelby Fusich landed the only run of the fourth after hitting a homerun on the first pitch she saw, making the score 4-0 going into the fifth and final inning.

The Cougars secured the run-rule win in five innings after scoring 5 runs in the fifth inning. The rally got started after Charlotte Romero singled, Kacie Burger walked, then back to back singles from Caitlin McCarthy and Carly Perry scored Romero. With bases loaded Shelby Fusich brought all of her runners home after a 3 RBI triple, giving the team the 8 run lead. Fusich was the final to score after a sac fly from Megan Gordon.

Kenzie Mattey earned her sixteenth win of the season after pitching the entire game.

UP NEXT: The sweep in Spearfish gives Colorado Christian a record of 33-12 and an RMAC record of 26-6. Hosting their final regular season games the Cougars will play New Mexico Highlands and Colorado Mesa in a pod that will take place on Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th. After that the team will be prepping for the conference tournament that begins on May 2nd.
