Colorado Christian returned to Bruce Hirst Field on Saturday for their baseball doubleheader matchup against the Trailblazers. The outcome was not what the Cougars were hoping for, losing game one 6-7, and game two 4-8.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
Game One CCU 6 – DSU 7
Â
The first game of the day saw the Cougars jump into the action early and often. CCU scored three runs in the first frame, eventually building a 6-3 lead after four innings. Their lead was built on the back
Sam Gallegos (3-4,3 RBI) and
Heath Hays (2-2 double and a triple) who brought in four runs and personally scored another pair. The Cougars at the plate also recorded zero strikeouts, the first time since February of 2017.
Â
Unfortunately, as the Cougars were just three outs away from notching a win against the Trailblazers, the DSU offense woke up in a big way. Trailing by two runs, Dixie State would run through the next six players in their lineup, avoiding recording any outs, and taking advantage of good hitting and pitching miscues to eventually earn a walk-off win with a single through the right side.
Â
Game Two CCU 4 – DSU 8
Â
After a deflating lose in game one of the day, the Cougar offense was a little slow to join in. Though they did score in the both the 3rd and 4th innings, briefly taking a 3-2 lead, all three of those runs were unearned gifted from three DSU errors. That lead was short lived as the Trailblazers scored three more runs in the bottom portion of the inning, eventually building it to its final amount of 4-8 in favor of the home team.
Â
WHAT IS NEXT:
Â
The series will conclude tomorrow afternoon as the teams will play one final 9-inning game before the Cougars hit the road for home. The game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
