The Cougars closed out their home series against the MSUD Roadrunners by splitting the Sunday doubleheader. The game one win, 8-4, was the second in as many weeks that CCU earned against the top team in the RMAC. Despite the win, CCU still dropped the series as MSUD took the second half of the day by a score of 3-10. After the weekend in Lakewood the Cougars sit at 9-24 on the season, and just 4-16 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: CCU 8 – MSUD 4
The first game of the day never saw the Cougars trail, thanks in large part to a strong showing from CCU starting pitcher
Justin Kiedinger and reliever
Kyler Riordan. Kiedinger held a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings, striking out just four but dominating the strike zone, forcing four fly outs and six more ground outs on a very economical 75 pitches. Justin's efforts wouldn't result in his third win of the season, that stat would be awarded to reliever
Kyler Riordan who finished the final 2 1/3 innings allowing just two hits and one earned run to notch his first win of the season.
Offensively,
Scotty Ingle and
Connor Marschall lead the Cougars. Ingle went 4-4 for the first time this season scoring two runs and bringing in another. Marschall brought Ingle in on one of his two hits that was a huge homerun blast in the bottom of the 6th inning sealing the win for CCU.
Kaleb Sorensen and
Alex Ginn also had very productive plate appearances, running up the MSUD pitch count going a combined 3-4 with a run and two RBI's, but also working four walks.
GAME TWO: CCU 3 – MSUD 10
Game two reverted back to the norm of the weekend with the Roadrunners scoring consistently, putting up runs in five of the seven innings played. The Cougs scored all three runs in a strong bottom 3rd inning where they held a short-lived lead, only to be tied up in the next frame.
Connor Marschall led the way in the second game as well, going 1-3, but tallying his second homerun of the day, bringing Ingle home with him again as well. Marschall is the first Cougar to hit two homeruns in the same day since
Scotty Wright did it last year against the Roadrunners in a single game on April 29, 2018.
WHAT IS NEXT:
The Cougs will get another weekend at home when they host the Cowboys of New Mexico Highlands University on April 12-14, playing a double header on Friday and single games on Saturday and Sunday. Action begins at 12:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon at All Star Park in Lakewood.
