Sunday Split

Taking the Sunday split after three wins in a row, the Cougars almost came away with the series sweep against the Mountain Lions.

GAME 1: W 6-1

The first game started out slow for both teams, but Colorado Christian broke the scoreless streak in the third after scoring a single run. Hanna Farmer tripled then made it home on a throwing error to put the team on the board.

Scoring her second homerun of the series, Carly Perry stepped up as the first batter in the fourth to put the Cougars up by 2. This carried some momentum going into the fifth where they rallied to score three runs. Kendall Yasui was the first to make it home after getting hit by the pitch, stealing second, and then stealing third as Stephanie Day was also hit by the pitch. Day was then relieved by pinch runner Megan Gordon. With a sac fly from Charlotte Romero, Yasui made it home for the first run of the inning. Gordon made it home after a triple from Kacie Burger, who then made it home on an error to finish out the inning and make the score 5-0 going into the sixth.

The Mountain Lions scored their first run of the series in the bottom of the sixth to shorten the difference to 5, but the Cougars responded with another single run in the seventh. Charlotte Romero was hit by the pitch, and had pinch runner Alex Garlock fill in. With a triple down the right line from Carly Perry, Garlock made it home to close out the game.

Jennifer Romero earned the win on the mound after striking out 8 Mountain Lions, giving her a total record of 10-4.

GAME 2: L 3-4

Making it an exciting game, the Mountain Lions came back in the bottom of the seventh to take game four with a walk-off.

Colorado Christian tallied a single run in the first to get started after Hanna Farmer singled, stole second, and came home after a single from Caitlin McCarthy. UC Colorado Springs responded well and took their first lead of the series after scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the third to put them up by 1. But after the first three batters for the Cougars stepped up in the fifth the Mountain Lions had lost their lead. Shelby Fusich hit a homerun to tie up the game, but with back to back doubles from Jamie Romero and Hanna Farmer Colorado Christian had the lead of 3-2.

However the Mountain Lions stepped up and scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the win, keeping the Cougars just shy of the sweep.

Kenzie Mattey took the loss on the mound after pitching almost the entire game, giving her a record of 15-4.

UP NEXT: The split on the day gives Colorado Christian an overall record of 27-10 and a conference record of 20-4. The next series will begin on Saturday, April 13th, as the Cougars host Colorado School of Mines.
