Cougars Pick Up Massive Win for First RMAC Victory

LAKEWOOD, CO- In a contest filled with momentum swings, the Colorado Christian women's basketball team came out on top. Responding to every run from MSU Denver, the Cougars picked up their first RMAC victory by a score of 70-63.

"It was just really exciting to see some pieces come together, girls hit some outside shots. Metro is a really, really good team, there was a lot of emotion out there and just exciting to see it come together," Head Coach Diane Thompson said.

HOW IT HAPPENED- The Cougars got off to an outrageous start, as Haley Hanson nailed two three-pointers in the first few minutes of the game. A layup from Jordyn Brown and a jumper from Christen Curry put Colorado Christian ahead 13-0 five minutes into the game. The Roadrunners eventually put together some points, but Hanson continued her torrid shooting with another three and a jumper to take the Cougars to the second quarter ahead by 11.

As good as the first quarter was for the Cougars, the Roadrunners were the ones in control in the second. MSU Denver scored the first 10 points of the period to climb right back into the game. A jumper from Curry put her team ahead by three, but a six point run to close the half took the Roadrunners to the break ahead 28-25.

The hot shooting picked back up to start the third quarter for the Cougars, as Jordyn Brown connected from deep and Lourdes Gonzalez and Hanson converted layups to take their team to a six point lead. A back and forth affair ensued from there as the lead changed five times in the third period alone. A strong close to the quarter led by Gonzalez and Hanson put the momentum with Colorado Christian as they took a 51-43 lead to the final frame.

Hanson had a game to remember, starting the final quarter off with a layup and jumper to maintain her team's lead. The play of the game came with 5:49 remaining, as Hanson was hit and banked in the jumper falling to her right. The Roadrunners tried to respond, but the Cougars kept hitting their shots down the stretch, including a number of free throws at the end to seal their first RMAC victory of the year 70-63.

Haley Hanson had a career night, pacing the Cougars with 26 points while Jordyn Brown scored 19. Lourdes Gonzalez notched her second straight double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Hanson led the team in assists with four.
