LAKEWOOD, CO – The Cougars prepared for the last game of the season as they looked towards finishing the year on a strong note. On the night that they honored the seniors the Cougars found the best way to do that and won 70-51 over Chadron State.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cougars and Eagles stayed attached at the hip through most of the first quarter, with the Cougars leading by one heading into the second quarter.
The Cougars found their footing heading into the second quarter, opening up the lead to as many as 11 including a 9-0 run with just over four minutes remaining.
The third quarter was all about the three, Mara Kemmer and Brookelyn Hurlbut combined for four straight threes for the Cougars which helped increase the lead to 18 for the Cougars. Leading by double digits for the entire quarter the Cougars headed into the final frame up by 16.
The Eagles looked to start a comeback in the fourth, cutting the lead to 11 at the start of the quarter, but foul trouble for the Eagles allowed the Cougars to take enough free throws to maintain a safe lead and cruise to a win.
STATS FROM THE SENIORS: McClain Walker led the team with 15 points, Olivia Christy had 14, Sam Nunez had 12, Brookelyn Hurlbut had 10 and Mara Kemmer recorded nine points. Hurlbut also added eight rebounds. The seniors combined for 12 steals.
