Cougars Can't Keep Up With High Flying Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, CO – The most exciting series in the RMAC so far this spring did not disappoint. The top two teams in the RMAC battled it out in two exciting games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME ONE:

The Cougars jumped out to their first lead of the series in game one, with Piper Lujan hitting a two run home run after Kenzie Middleton opened the scoring with a sac fly.

Up 3-0 heading into the fourth the middle of the lineup did damage to extend the Cougars lead as Stephanie Day single up the middle with the bases loaded to bring in two runs and then Lujan singled to left field and drove home the sixth run of the game for the Cougars.

With a lineup as potent as the Mavericks, no lead is safe. Colorado Mesa scored seven times in the bottom of the fourth inning including three of the runs being unearned as the Mavericks capitalized on Cougars mistakes.

The Mavericks scored again in the fifth to extend the lead to two runs which was too much for the Cougars to overcome as Colorado Mesa comes from behind to take the first game of the day.

COUGAR LEADERS: Lujan had three hits and three RBI, Sydney Reamer and Kayla Middleton also had three hits for the Cougars.

In the circle Sydney Rawlings stared the game and allowed two earned runs on five hits. Samaria Roope and Jennifer Romero both pitched in relief for the Cougars.

GAME TWO: The momentum from game one for the Mavericks carried over to the second game as it was the game of the long ball, Colorado Mesa hit home runs in the second and fifth innings while the Cougars went deep in the sixth thanks to Sydney Reamer. A double from the Mavericks put the game away in the sixth as it scored two runs and made the lead 6-1.

COUGAR LEADERS: Reamer had the only extra base hit for the Cougars as well as the only RBI. Caitlin McCarthy had two hits for the Cougars.

Julie Katz went four innings, allowing four runs and getting two strikeouts. Samaria Roope and Jennifer Romero both pitched in relief.
