LAKEWOOD, CO – While the Cougars RMAC tournament debut didn't yield the result the program wanted, there are building blocks in place for a solid second day.

Colorado Mesa used a handful of big inning early in riding that momentum to a 15-7 victory on Thursday afternoon at Suplizio Field.

Despite the setback the Cougar rallied late with the hope those late runs translates into success against No. 19 MSU Denver in Friday mornings (10 a.m.) elimination game.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado Christian looked to be in a good position to take the early lead as they put the first two batters on third and first base. However, Mavericks starting pitcher Andrew Morris struck out the next three batters.

With that momentum built, the host Mavericks jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first inning as they used a handful of walks to build the early edge. Colorado Mesa added to that lead in the next frame while chasing Cougar starter Connor McCollum for the game. During the inning the home team pieced together three run on three hits to edge in front 5-0.

The Mavericks hit train continued in the fourth and fifth innings as they combined to scored seven runs on six hits highlighted by a Harrison Rogers homerun. After five innings Colorado Mesa held a 12-0 advantage.

The Cougars got on the scoreboard in the seventh frame when Jordan Medina drew a base loaded walk then Luke Thompson got an RBI on a ground out to first base. Colorado Mesa responded with a three-run inning to increase their cushion.

In the eighth inning Colorado Christian put together a five-hit frame while taking advantage of a pair of Maverick wild pitches plus an error as they crossed the plate five times.
