Cougars Split the Day With MSU Billings

LAKEWOOD, CO – Finishing out their last day of games before conference begins, the Cougars split 1-1 on Sunday afternoon with the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets.

GAME ONE - MSU Billings had a come back win over CCU in game one of the day, winning 13-7 after being down 4-1 in the bottom of the third. The win sealed the series victory for the Yellowjackets, giving them their third win of the weekend.

GAME TWO -  A strong finish from the Cougars earned them the win in the final game of the series. CCU took the win after back-to-back five run innings in the fifth and sixth.

The first run of the game came after Gabe Ramos doubled, and was brought home by the next batter as Caden Walton singled. The Yellowjackets took the lead after scoring single runs in both the third and fourth, making the score 2-1 going into the fifth.

Setting the tone for the inning, Saxton Sorenson doubled to start the bottom of the fifth. A MSU Billings error brought home Sorenson and put Jeff Sanchez on first. Sanchez then advanced to second and scored after a single from Eli Ludwig to give CCU the lead. Next Wyatt Crenshaw singled, and was followed by Ramos with a single that brought home Ludwig. A double to right center from Caden Walton scored both Ramos and Crenshaw to finish out the scoring streak, making the count 6-2.

Montana State Billings notched one more on in the top of the sixth, shortening the Cougars lead to 3.

Colorado Christian carried off of their momentum and added another five runs on to the board in the bottom of the sixth. Saxton Sorenson was first to the plate and walked, and was followed by Jeff Sanchez who was hit by pitch. Frankie Shearn then singled to load the bases. Eli Ludwig got an RBI after reaching on an error and bringing home Sorenson. Wyatt Crenshaw then made his mark with a 3 RBI triple to put the Cougars ahead by 7, with a score of 10-3. Gabe Ramos then singled to bring home Crenshaw for the final run for CCU, making the score 11-3.

The Yellowjackets then tacked on two more runs in the top of seventh but could not overcome the difference, closing out the game with a final score of 11-5 in favor of the Cougars.

CCU's offense came alive to claim the win, and on the mound the credit was due to freshman Justin Estrada who had an incredible 14 strikeouts in just 6.2 innings – striking out almost half of the batters he faced.

UP NEXT - Colorado Christian will start their conference campaign on Friday, March 4th, as they travel to play the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys four times over three days. Both the Cougars and the Cowboys have a record of 2-10 going into RMAC play. The last time the two teams met was in March of 2021, and the series was split 2-2.
