The Cougars won a game that defined the character of this team tonight, overcoming a 14 point deficit to win the game by 8. The atmosphere was electric as Colorado Christian played a gritty, fast-paced game.
The Cougars started off slower, as the Mountain Lions took control early. Regan Locante started hot with 2 deep threes, and
Maggie Hutka had 5 points. But the first quarter was controlled by UCCS, ending 22 to 15.
The second quarter gave some momentum back to the Cougars, as
Maggie Phipps hit two early three-pointers, and Hutka had a big block. But the Lions stayed consistent, shooting field goals at a 50% clip, and 66% for their three-pointers, going into half time at 42-33.
The Cougars did not lay down, however, and Hutka made some key stops. The Cougars brought the score within three, and never looked back.
Dasiya Jones stepped up in the 3rd with 8 points and Hutka had a clutch steal that turned into an easy layup. UCCS took a timeout with one minute left and the game being tied, 49-49. Both teams were playing scrappy back-and-forth defense, but CCU had the momentum.
Victoria Perez hit a three-pointer from downtown, and the quarter ended 53-53.
The last quarter was all Cougars. Perez hit 2 more huge three-pointers with LoConte and Jones having 22 and 19 points, respectively. The Mountain Lions tried to claw their way back in, but the Cougars kept climbing. CCU closed out their epic comeback, 83-75.
It was a true team effort, with the Cougars shooting 53% from the field and 57% from the three-point line. This was a huge win for CCU as they head into more RMAC play.
Colorado Christian are back in action on December 17th with another home matchup against Regis University at 2 p.m. MST.
