LAKEWOOD, CO- CCU closed out a four-game sweep in a pair of games against UCCS on Sunday. A convincing 7-0 victory in game one was followed by a 12-7 victory to extend their win streak to 22 games.
GAME ONE
Reigning RMAC Player of the Week Miki Berg put her team ahead quickly, blasting a two-run homer to center field for a 2-0 lead. Savannah Tourville picked up an RBI groundout to make it 3-0 heading to the third. Kenzie Middleton smashed the second home run of the day for her team, a solo blast in the third inning. Middleton then made it consecutive home runs in the fourth with a two-run shot to right center. An error allowed Logan Menzies to score and close the game out with a 7-0 victory.
Kali Crandall secured win number 9 with a five inning outing with eight strikeouts and just two hits allowed. Samaria Roope closed things out with two innings of shutout pitching. Middleton carried the offense with three RBI on a pair of homers.
GAME TWO
The second contest saw the visitors strike early with a two-run blast in the first. An error allowed the Cougars to tie the game up 2-2 in the first. Taylor Olsen then picked up an RBI groundout, but a three run shot from UCCS gave them a 5-3 lead. CCU quickly struck back, as Tourville smacked a double, one of three on the day, to close the gap to one run. Sami Edwards came through in the clutch with a single to tie the game up. The offense exploded from there, as a six run fifth led by Tourville and Edwards blew the game wide open at 11-5 Cougars. Berg then blasted a solo shot for her second long ball of the day, and CCU finished off a four-game sweep with a 12-7 victory.
Abrie Castillo secured the win with 3.2 innings pitched with three strikeouts. Tourville and Edwards led the offense with a pair of RBI each on some clutch situational hitting.
The Cougars now ride a 22 game win streak and will take that to Golden as they take on Colorado School of Mines on March 11 at 12 p.m. MST.
