ALAMOSA, CO- The Cougars headed to Adams State for an important matchup with the Grizzlies on Friday night. Despite a monster effort from Maggie Hutka, the hot shooting hosts took the victory by a final score of 87-74.
The Grizzlies got off to a fast start as they raced to an early 7-0 lead. CCU responded, starting with a three from Dasiya Jones. ASU maintained a strong lead throughout the quarter and headed to the second quarter leading 22-13.Â
Another strong start to the quarter sent the hosts ahead by a healthy margin, but Victoria Perez nailed a three to bring her team closer. A Jones jumper and pair of free throws from Nicole Bowlin cut the deficit to eight before the teams went to the break with ASU leading 37-28.Â
The Cougars came out firing to start the third quarter, starting with a Hutka three, three-point play from Agnes Paul and a layup from Hutka. Just like that the teams were separated by just one point, and after Regan LoConte hit a three, Jones connected on a jumper to give her team their first lead of the game at 41-39. The Grizzlies fought back, and they took a 55-50 lead into the final period.Â
A three point barrage started the fourth for ASU as they extended their lead out to 13 points in a hurry, and they never looked back. A Perez three brought CCU back to within eight, but the home team never let them get any closer as they finished with an 87-74 win.Â
Hutka led the team with 29 points, five rebounds and five steals. Perez followed with 16 points, while each pulled down nine rebounds with seven points apiece.Â
CCU will look to get back on track as they head to Fort Lewis on January 20 at 4 p.m. MST.
