PUEBLO, CO- The Cougars closed their tournament in Pueblo on Saturday with a matchup against Texas A&M University Kingsville. After taking a first quarter lead, the Javelinas leaned on their defense the rest of the way as they claimed a 61-53 victory.
Maggie Hutka got things going right away with an early three-pointer, and
Victoria Perez connected from deep for a 6-0 lead. Perez continued to score with another three while
Presley Wheeler ended the quarter with a trey for the 19-12 advantage.Â
TAMUK put the clamps on defensively in the second quarter, rallying back to claim a 27-23 lead after an
Ali Wetta layup.
Dasiya Jones tightened the gap to two with a jumper, and neither team scored over the final 3:40 of the second quarter to take the teams to halftime with Kingsville narrowly ahead 27-25.Â
The third quarter was a tough one for CCU as they could not get their offense going. Phipps and Perez converted last baskets, but the Javelinas took a 43-35 lead to the final period.Â
The Cougars pushed to rally back into things as Wetta hit a jumper and Perez drilled a three to make it 51-45.
Nicole Bowlin drilled a three to cut the gap to five points, but that was as close as CCU would get as the Javelinas closed the game well to claim the 61-53 victory.Â
Perez paced the offense with 18 points on four three-pointers while Jones led on the boards with nine rebounds. Perez dished out six assists followed by five from Bowlin.Â
Colorado Christian continue play on the road as they head to Seattle, Washington to take on Saint Martin's on November 29 at 2 p.m. MST.Â
