LAKEWOOD, CO – The CCU Cougars hosted the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers in an exciting women's basketball matchup at the CCU Event Center Thursday. The Cougars have been on the road for the first 8 games of the season, and the fans were excited to witness an action-filled evening at home! Unfortunately a hot shooting first half from SDSMT was too much to overcome in a 66-56 defeat.
Victoria Perez helped spark the Cougars scoring in the first half with 6 points. She was also a big part of the defensive side of the ball, causing the Hardrockers to turnover the ball with her pressure.
Hayley Luther, a freshman, was also involved in the attack for the team as she left the first half with 5 points from a couple layups and a jumper.
The Cougars trailed the Hardrockers 57-37 in the third quarter but continued to press to cut into the deficit. Perez continued her strong performance with a quick four points to start the second half, while
Elise Grosdidier put on a show, scoring two three-pointers in the third quarter, helping the Cougars to slice the lead in half, 48-59.
The Cougars continued to push hard to get back in the game with
Nicole Bowlin never letting down in her intensity on defense. Luther hit a jumper from deep and a layup to bring the Cougars within nine, 52-61. The lead tightened to 56-63 as Perez hit a jumper.
The Cougars showed perseverance to fight their way back into this game, but eventually lost to the Hardrockers, 66-56.
Elise Grosdidier played outstanding, ending with 17 points while Perez finished the game with 14 points.
The Cougars brought intensity and a show to their game against South Dakota Mines Thursday evening. The team will play again at home December 14 as they take on Black Hills State at 1 p.m. MST.
