GUNNISON, CO- The Cougars continued RMAC play as they looked for their third straight conference win at Western Colorado on Saturday afternoon. Led by a huge double-double from Maggie Hutka, CCU pulled away for a 71-59 victory to claim another key conference win.
Agnes Paul kicked things off with a jumper, and Hutka followed with a three-point play to put her team ahead. Regan LoConte stretched the lead with a three-pointer to make it 18-7, while LoConte closed the quarter with a layup as the teams went to the second quarter with CCU leading 20-12.
Dasiya Jones and Hutka quickly pushed the lead to 12 with layups in the second, and Hutka continued her excellent night with a jumper. The Mountaineers refused to go down easily on their home floor, clawing their way back into things and trailing by just four heading into halftime.
Western Colorado tied the game at 32 apiece early in the third, but Hutka went on a six-point scoring run of her own to put her team back ahead. The teams battled for positioning from there, and Colorado Christian headed to the final quarter leading 48-44.
The game got close in the fourth, as WCU closed the gap to one with 7:26 remaining. CCU closed well from there, as a Hutka layup and pair of free throws from Victoria Perez pushed the lead to nine. The Mountaineers were forced to foul late, and the Cougars converted them to pull away for a 71-59 victory.
Hutka dominated the entire game, pouring in 30 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Bowlin and Perez chipped in 10 points apiece and Perez impressed by dishing out six assists.
Colorado Christian returns home on February 16 for an important RMAC tilt with CSU Pueblo at 5 p.m. MST at the CCU Event Center.
