ALAMOSA, CO- The Cougars opened RMAC play on the road on Saturday as they took on Adams State in a doubleheader. CCU dominated the Grizzlies in every way, winning 12-2 and 14-0 to start 2-0 in conference play.
GAME ONE
CCU took a few innings to get going in the first contest, but when they did there was no looking back. The third inning saw a six run burst from the visitors, starting with an RBI single from Kayla Middleton. Sami Edwards then doubled in another run before Kaila Eastburn doubled home two more. Eastburn then scored on a wild pitch before Leah Garcia notched an RBI single for the 6-0 lead.
Edwards picked up another RBI on a sac fly in the fourth to stretch the lead to 7-0. The Grizzlies managed to plate a run in the fifth and sixth to make it 7-2, but the Cougars responded in a big way. Mia Stankiewicz singled home a run in the seventh, and Camryn Quilling singled home yet another run. The icing on the cake came when Kenzie Middleton tripled down the right field line, scoring two. An error on the catcher obstructing the plate led to Middleton scoring as the final score of 12-2 was reached.
Emma Duncan improved to 6-0 on the season, striking out six and allowing just two runs on three hits to continue her stellar start to the season. The duo of Eastburn and Edwards led with two RBI as the offense saw production from all parts of the batting order.
GAME TWO
The second contest saw an even bigger rout than the first and the impending result was apparent from the jump. A pair of runs came home in the first as Edwards doubled in a run followed by a sac fly from Quilling. In the second, Kenzie Middleton got the scoring going with a single, and Edwards notched two more RBI with a single of her own. Garcia then singled home another pair as the lead ballooned to 7-0. Stankiewicz singled in another to end the inning with an 8-0 lead.
Rawnie Weststrate made a huge impact in the third as she sent a ball over the center field fence for a solo homer. Another run scored on an error from ASU, and Kenzie tripled home two more in the fourth. Edwards singled another home in the fourth, and Kayla closed the scoring with an RBI single in the fifth as the visitors ran away with a 14-0 run-rule victory.
Eastburn nabbed the victory with four innings pitched with no hits or runs allowed. Edwards led the offense with four RBI followed by Kenzie Middleton with three.
Colorado Christian will close their four-game series with a doubleheader on February 18 at Adams State with game times set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST.
