Cougars Clinch a Spot in Playoffs Against Rival MSUD

LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars closed out their last home game of the season Saturday night against crosstown rivals MSU Denver inside the CCU Event Center. Honoring the two seniors on the team, Regan LoConte and Agnes Paul the Cougars earned a hard fought victory over the Roadrunners by a final score of 66-52.

The game started with the Roadrunners getting an early lead in the first two minutes in the game. Agnes Paul stepped up to the free throw line to get the Cougars first points of the night. Victoria Perez got the momentum going and followed by Maggie Hutka with a jumper inside the paint. It was a strong defensive performance from the Cougars only allowing nine points for the Roadrunners as the first quarter ended with the Cougars leading 12-9.

The second quarter started off with the Roadrunners attacking heavily not only tying the game but taking the lead from a layup. Nicole Bowlin responded immediately with a shot beyond the arc and cashing in a three. Freshman Kennedy White got the bench pumped up after scoring back to back offensive possessions, the Cougars went on a 15-0 scoring run with two minutes still to play in the half. Another three from Bowlin ended the half as the Cougars led 34-26.

Agnes Paul continued her dominance in the paint with a layup and field goal, followed by LoConte keeping the Cougars ahead by 10. The Cougars played very well offensively and defensively at one point extending their lead up by 16 from Dasiya Jones getting a layup on the fastbreak. The Roadrunners would cut the lead back down to 10 with two shots beyond the arc as the quarter would end 50-40 with the Cougars in front.

The fourth began with an Agnes Paul layup and the shots kept falling down for the Cougars as they grew their lead up by 18. The Roadrunners gave the Cougars a really good battle in the later stage of the game defensively as the shots slowed down for the home team. As the time went by the Cougars shut down the Roadrunners as the final horn went off the Cougars came away with a big win 66-52. With that win the Cougars officially clinched a playoff spot for postseason basketball.

Bowlin led the team with 16 points. The senior Regan LoConte put up 13 points in her last home game. While Dasiya Jones was big in the rebound game collecting 10 rebounds for the Cougars.
