LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars closed their series with CSU Pueblo on Saturday with a doubleheader on a beautiful Colorado day. CCU closed the four-game sweep with a dominant display, claiming victories by scores of 6-2 and 10-2 to extend their winning streak to eight games.
GAME ONE
The Thunderwolves struck first in game one, tallying a solo home run in the first.
Kayla Middleton led off with a response, roping a ball into the right field corner and racing around every base to score an in-the-park home run to tie the game. A steal of home in the second put CSUP ahead 2-1, but that was the last lead they would hold.
Logan Menzies tripled home a run to tie the game in the second, and
Leah Garcia singled her home for the lead.
Sami Edwards singled in another, and an
Elyse McMullin single in the sixth extended the lead.
Camryn Quilling tallied the final run with an RBI single as the Cougars pulled away for a 6-2 victory.
Emma Duncan improved to 12-1 in the circle, striking out a pair and allowing just three hits. Kayla impressed in the leadoff position, tallying a rare inside the park homer to get her teams' scoring going.
GAME TWO
The offense erupted in the first inning of the second contest, starting with a two-run blast from
Kenzie Middleton. Garcia plated a pair more with a double, and McMullin doubled home another for a 5-0 lead after one.
Kaila Eastburn uncorked a two-run homer run of her own in the second as the Cougars were rolling.
A run from the visitors in the third did not slow down CCU as
Kenzie Middleton notched a sac fly in the fourth.
Logan Menzies followed with her teams' third homer of the game, another two-run bomb to left field for a 10-1 lead. The Thunderwolves scored a single run in the fifth, but it was not enough as the Cougars picked up the mercy rule victory 10-2.
Hanna Espinoza excelled once again, recording win number eight on the season with no earned runs in four innings of work. The ball was flying out of the yard in the second game, as Kenzie, Eastburn and Menzies all launched long balls for a combined six runs.
Colorado Christian will now hit the road for a four-game series at Chadron State, with first pitch set for 12 p.m. MST on March 28.
