CCU Walkoff Roadrunners in Thrilling Series Opener

LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars opened up their final regular season series at All Star Park on Thursday as they took on MSU Denver in a doubleheader. Colorado Christian rallied back in the final inning to win in walkoff fashion in the first contest before the second game was suspended in the top of the 4th due to lightning and rain in the Lakewood area.

The bats were hot early, as the four of the first five batters notched hits. Kenzie Middleton notched an RBI with a single, while Leah Garcia singled in another run moments later. Logan Menzies picked up a sacrifice fly as the Cougars wrapped up the first inning with a 3-0 lead.

Garcia posted her second RBI of the game in the third inning on another RBI single, but the Roadrunners refused to go down without a fight. Runs in the fifth and sixth from the visitors closed the gap to 4-2 heading to the final inning. Then, MSU Denver erupted for four runs on a grand slam to put the Cougars on the ropes. Just like they have done in the face of adversity all season, CCU clawed their way into a position to win the game.

Samaria Roope began the inning with a walk before Cheyenne Stark notched a pinch hit single. Kayla Middlton followed with a single up the middle as the bases were loaded. Kenzie stepped up to the plate and proceeded to send the park into a frenzy with a bases-clearing triple to right field as the Cougars walked it off 7-6.

Picking up the win was Hanna Espinoza as she shut down MSU Denver after they had taken the lead late. Kenzie led the team with four RBI, including the game winning triple when her team needed her most.

The second contest was in the top of the 4th with the teams tied at 1-1 when lightning struck within the area. After deliberation, the game was suspended until April 26 at 9:30 a.m. MST, at which point the teams will resume where they left off. The originally scheduled doubleheader for Friday will still be played at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST from All Star Park.
