GRAND JUNCTION, CO- The Cougars took on MSU Denver in an elimination game on Saturday morning at the RMAC Tournament before facing off with Regis in the afternoon. An impressive outing in the circle from RMAC Freshman of the Year
Elyse McMullin led CCU to a 4-1 victory over the Roadrunners, but the upset minded Rangers walked it off 4-3 in the seventh to claim the RMAC Tournament Title in the second game of the day.
GAME ONE
Taking on MSU Denver for the second time in as many days at the tournament, the Cougars were intent on making their fourth straight conference title game.
Kaila Eastburn put her team on top with a two-run shot to center field in the third inning as CCU grabbed the momentum.
Insurance came courtesy of
Logan Menzies in the fifth as she roped a two-run single for the 4-0 lead. McMullin was fantastic pitching to a hot hitting Roadrunners team, holding them scoreless through six before giving up a meaningless sac fly in the seventh as CCU advanced to the title game and a rematch with Regis after a 4-1 victory.
Elyse proved why she was voted the conference freshman of the year, notching the complete game victory with 6 strikeouts and just 1 final inning run allowed. Eastburn and Menzies provided all the offense needed with a pair of RBI apiece in the victory.
GAME TWO
The Cougars faced off against Regis in a rematch of their Friday afternoon matchup. In that game, the Rangers rallied for 6 runs in the seventh to come back and steal a win. In todays' game, Regis took the early lead with three runs in the third inning to take control.
CCU started to chip away at the lead as
Kenzie Middleton came around to score in the fourth on a wild pitch to cut the lead to two runs.
Cheyenne Stark and CCU caught a break in the sixth as a fly ball to center field was dropped and two runs came around to score on the error. The game went into the final inning tied at 3-3 with a potential final game looming if the Cougars could pull out the win. Unfortunately, the offense could not plate a run in their half of the seventh, and the Rangers pulled out the improbable walkoff victory to claim the RMAC title as they went undefeated throughout the tournament with a 4-3 win over the Cougars.
The offense could never quite find their groove as the Rangers used their two best pitchers to great effect in the game.
Emma Duncan was strong in relief, going 3.2 innings with three strikeouts.
Kaila Eastburn,
Kenzie Middleton and
Kayla Middleton earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team for their efforts in Grand Junction over the past three days.
