Cougars Begin Home Play with a Bang in Doubleheader Sweep

LAKEWOOD, CO- CCU opened play at home on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader against UCCS at All Star Park. After a hard fought 5-3 victory in game one, the offense opened up the floodgates for a dominant 13-0 mercy-rule victory

GAME ONE
The first inning featured a run from the Mountain Lions after an unfortunate injury to Kaila Eastburn. Danae Lopez provided the response in the second with a two-run homer to put her team ahead.

Kat Hanson singled in a fourth inning run to make it 3-1, and Leah Garcia smacked a two RBI single to extend the lead to 5-1. UCCS rallied for two runs in the sixth as they brought things closer at 5-3. Carson Griggs came in for a crucial four-out save as she closed things out in the 7th to give CCU the 5-3 victory.

Hanna Espinoza picked up the victory with 4.2 innings pitched and just two runs allowed while Griggs snagged her first save of the season. Lopez and Garcia provided the offense with 2 RBI apiece.

GAME TWO
The second contest began with two scoreless innings, but the offense exploded for CCU in the 3rd and 4th innings. Rachel Williams gave her team a jolt as she launched a three-run home run to right center. Leah followed that up with a solo bomb of her own for a 4-0 victory, and an RBI single from Mia Stankiewicz closed the third inning with a 5-0 CCU lead.

The fourth inning was a huge one for the Cougars as they put the game out of reach. Cheyenne Stark opened with a double and scored on an error at first base, while Leah picked up another pair of RBI with another clutch single. Peyton Marvel singled home run number 9 for the Cougars, and Stankiewicz doubled in another run for a 10-0 lead. Lauren Garcia got in on the scoring with an RBI single as the lead ballooned to 11-0. Stark put an exclamation on the inning as she came up for the second time in the fourth and proceeded to blast a two-run homer over the centerfield fence as a 5-0 lead heading into the inning turned into a mercy-rule 13-0 victory.

Emma Duncan picked up the complete game shutout with 5 strikeouts and just 3 hits allowed. Williams and Leah Garcia paced the offense with 3 RBI apiece, and Stark and Stankiewicz each tallied 2 RBI.

With a 6-0 record in RMAC play, CCU will look to close out their series against UCCS with two more wins at home on February 23 with games slated for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST.
