SAN ANTONIO, TX- The Cougars headed down to Texas for a doubleheader at St. Mary's on Thursday afternoon. After a tough first inning led to a 7-1 defeat in game one, CCU kept things tight throughout and showed a lot of fight in an eventual 6-4 defeat in game two.
GAME ONE
The Rattler jumped on top of CCU in the first inning, using effective hitting to surge ahead 7-0 after one inning. From there one out, the Cougars pitching did not allow another run the rest of the way.
The Cougars managed to get on the board in the sixth inning off of a
Leah Garcia RBI single to plate
Kat Hanson, but that was all they could manage as the fast start from SMU led them to an eventual 7-1 victory.
Kaila Eastburn started in the circle, and
Hanna Espinoza,
Alexis Guzman and
Carson Griggs all saw action throughout.
GAME TWO
St. Mary's used more first inning offensive production in the second contest of the day, plating a pair of runs in the first for a 2-0 advantage. CCU immediately responded in the top of the 2nd as
Leah Garcia smacked an RBI double down the right field line.
Danae Lopez tied things up 2-2 with an RBI knock as things stood level.
The Rattlers briefly took the lead 3-2 in the third, but Colorado Christian came right back as
Leah Garcia ripped a two RBI double for a 4-3 advantage. A pair of runs in the fourth from St. Mary's put them ahead 5-4, and one more tally in the sixth gave the Rattlers the insurance they needed as they held on for a 6-4 victory.
Elyse McMullin was strong in the circle, and Espinoza closed out the game. Garcia was stellar with three RBI, while the newcomer Lopez tallied an RBI for her first collegiate run batted in.
The Cougars will travel up to Austin tomorrow February 7 to take on St. Edwards in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST.
