GOLDEN, CO- The Cougars traveled to nearby Colorado School of Mines for a doubleheader on the newly turfed Joe Coors, Jr. Softball field Sunday. After a late surge gave CCU an 8-2 victory in game one, a grueling 11 inning battle ended in a 3-2 defeat for the visitors.
GAME ONE
Elyse McMullin gave herself some early run support as she doubled to leadoff the game and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. She held the Orediggers scoreless through three innings in the circle before a two-run shot in the fourth put the hosts on top 2-1.
The offense struggled to get anything going until the pivotal sixth inning. Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases up for
Kat Hanson, and the freshman delivered with an RBI single to plate the tying run.
Camryn Quilling then drew a walk to put her team on top, and
Cheyenne Stark broke things open as she ripped a two-run single to close the inning with CCU ahead 5-2. Three more runs in the seventh sealed the deal as the late push from the Cougars gave them an 8-2 victory.
McMullin notched the win as she went all seven innings with four strikeouts and just two runs allowed. Stark and Hanson paced the offense with a pair of RBI apiece.
GAME TWO
The second contest was a pitchers duel throughout and ended up becoming a marathon to the finish. Mines struck first in the third off a sac fly, but
Rachel Williams tied things in the fifth off an RBI single to plate Stark.
From there,
Emma Duncan and the Orediggers' Kat Miller went to work and shut down any scoring threat for the next five innings. Heading into the 11th knotted at 1-1, consecutive singles and an error allowed Stark to race home on an RBI groundout from Williams. Leading 2-1 and needing just three outs for the win, the Cougars were unable to keep Mines at bay as they walked it off on an errant throw to claim a 3-2 victory.
Duncan went 10 innings in the circle, hurling 142 pitches and striking out four batters with just two runs allowed. Williams picked up both RBI for her team in the extra inning affair.
The Cougars will look to claim the series on March 17 in another doubleheader at Mines slated for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST.
