Cougars Walkoff Rangers on Schramms Two-Run Double in Instant Classic

LAKEWOOD, CO- Colorado Christian closed non-conference play on Sunday afternoon with a single game against Regis at All Star Park. In an absolute thriller, the two teams battled back and forth before the Cougars walked it off in the bottom of the 9th off a two-run double from Brandon Schramm.

CCU struck first with a run in the first inning on a passed ball, and they made it 2-0 in the second on an RBI fielder's choice from Jackson Stahl. The Rangers answered with a two-run homer in the third to tie things, but Nathan Mensen tallied an RBI fielder's choice to give his team a 3-2 lead heading to the fourth.

Neither team managed a run in the 4th, but a two-run fifth put Regis ahead 4-3. Mensen tied the game off a well struck double in the fifth, and Lukas Hinze provided a massive jolt with a two-run blast over the right field fence in the 6th. Regis plated a single run in the 7th, but CCU responded to stretch the lead to 8-5 after an error plated a run and Stahl got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Rangers remained resilient, making a comeback to score four runs in the top of the ninth to take an improbable 9-8 advantage heading to the final inning. After two quick groundouts had the Cougars down to their final out, Hinze stepped into the box and lined a triple to right center field to keep the home teams' hopes alive. Major Maydon entered as a pinch hitter, and after a long battle he drew a well earned walk. That set the stage for Schramm, and with the count at 1-1, he cranked the ball over the centerfielders head to easily score Hinze. Maydon hit the gas rounding third, and he beat the throw home as the dugout emptied to celebrate the 10-9 victory with an elated Schramm.

Chad Naf started on the mound, going 5 full innings with just 2 earned runs allowed. Austin DeMello put in 2 innings of work, and Mason Hagel-Pitt and Sawyer Shepherd closed as Shepherd snagged the win. 7 different Cougars notched a hit in the game as Mensen led with 3 RBI. Hinze and Stahl had two RBI and Schramm added two RBI on the last play of the game to seal the victory for his team.

With pre-conference competition at an end, CCU will begin RMAC play with a four-game series at UCCS beginning March 7 at 2 p.m. MST.
