DENVER, CO- The Cougars began a pivotal series at MSU Denver on Friday with a doubleheader. With 1.5 games separating the top two teams in the RMAC, CCU retained their slim advantage with a split on day one as the Roadrunners took game one 5-2 before a CCU explosion for a 10-2 run-rule victory.
GAME ONE
The Cougars had a hard time finding their offensive rhythm in the first contest of the day as they were held scoreless until the fourth. MSUD plated two runs in the third, but CCU answered with an RBI single from
Rachel Williams. A three-run homer by the Roadrunners in the fifth was too much for CCU to overcome as a seventh inning RBI knock from Eslyse McMullin was not enough in a 5-2 defeat.
GAME TWO
Seeking redemption in game two, CCU came to play with a renewed spirit. After the hosts struck first with a run in the second, Williams singled home two in the third for the Cougars' first lead of the day. MSU Denver tied things at 2-2 in the fourth before an offensive barrage in the fifth and sixth gave CCU control.
Colorado Christian used an error to regain the lead, and
Cheyenne Stark singled in another run for a 4-2 lead. A wild pitch allowed
Leah Garcia to push the lead to three, and McMullin delivered the knockout punch in the sixth with a massive three-run homer to right field to make it 8-2.
Peyton Marvel then launched a two-run blast left center as the Cougars won via mercy-rule 10-2.
Emma Duncan was excellent in the circle yet again, winning her 11th game of the season while striking out two and scattering four hits and two runs across six innings of work. It was a balanced offensive effort as seven Cougars notched hits, with McMullin leading the way with her three RBI followed by Williams and Marvel with two.
CCU will close their series at MSU Denver on March 29 with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST.
