COLORADO SPRINGS, CO- The Cougars continued their four-game set at UCCS with a Sunday doubleheader at Mountain Lion Park. After taking early leads in both games, CCU was unable to hold off the hosts in a pair of setbacks 9-6 and 10-9.
GAME ONE
Gavin Acosta got the offense going early, leading off the game with a solo home run.
Major Maydon followed with a sac fly to make it 2-0 after one.
Gregory Rangel padded the lead with a two-run single in the second to make it 4-0 after two innings of play.
The Mountain Lions scored 6 runs across the third and fourth innings, but the Cougars came back with two runs in the sixth to level the game at 6-6. UCCS managed to plate three runs in their half of the sixth, and they closed out the 9-6 win in the seven-inning contest.
GAME TWO
CCU struck first again in game two of the day as
Mason Hagel-Pitt scored Acosta with an RBI groundout. UCCS tied things in the first at 1-1, but the Cougars responded in a big way in the second.
Nathan Owens gave his team the lead back with an RBI groundout, and
Connor Laeng singled in a run to make it 3-1. Rangel then provided a huge jolt, blasting a three-run home run to right field as the Cougars jumped ahead 6-1.
The Mountain Lions closed the gap to 6-5, but the Cougars answered with a
Lukas Hinze homer in the fourth. Hagel-Pitt then launched a two-run homer as CCU jumped ahead 9-5. Two runs in the fourth from the hosts made it 9-7, and they rallied in the sixth for three runs to claim a 10-9 lead. UCCS was able to close things out for the 10-9 victory in a pair of tough losses for the Cougars.
CCU will close their series in Colorado Springs with a single contest on March 10 at 12 p.m. MST.
