Cougars Celebrate Seniors with Doubleheader Sweep of Mines

LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars celebrated their nine seniors on a beautiful day at All Star Park on Sunday as they closed their home slate of the season with a doubleheader against Mines. The team played inspired baseball as a complete game victory from Saxton Sorenson in game one was followed by an offensive explosion for a dominant game two victory.

GAME ONE
The offense got going in game one as a walk of Lukas Hinze was followed by a huge two-run homer to left field by Mason Hagel-Pitt. A pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth put the Orediggers ahead 3-2, but William Brassil tied things up in the fourth with a rocked to right center that left the yard. Another run scored on an error to give CCU the lead back, and a Landry Hamm base knock brought in two more runs. Major Maydon singled home the final run of the inning for the 7-3 lead.

Mines managed to rally and tie the game up after six innings at 7-7, but the Cougars had an answer. Gavin Acosta doubled to start the response, and Maydon smacked a single with the bases loaded for a two-RBI hit to make it 9-7. Nathan Mensen later picked up an RBI walk to send his team ahead 10-7. Sorenson closed things out in the seventh to seal the 10-7 game one victory.

Saxton had a tremendous senior day start, pitching the entire seven innings with four strikeouts and scattering 10 hits as he faced 33 batters and threw 99 pitches to claim the victory. Maydon had a big game with 3 RBI, while Hagel-Pitt and Hamm had 2 RBI apiece.

GAME TWO
A pair of first inning homers from Mines saw them jump ahead 2-0, but in the second the game flipped. An RBI walk drawn by Ross Panlasigui and a plunk of Acosta tied things up before an RBI fielder's choice from Connor Laeng put CCU ahead. An error scored another run and Maydon roped a single to make it 5-2.

The offense continued to roll in the third as Laeng singled in another run and Acosta notched another extra base hit with a two-run double. Hinze singled in one more as a 9-2 lead opened up for the hosts. A Panlasigui single in the fourth stretched the lead to 10-2 after four. An Oredigger run in the fifth was answered by a two-run double from Nathan Mensen and an RBI single from Seth Gustafson to send the Cougars ahead 13-3. Three runs scored in the sixth and seventh from Mines was not enough as the hosts ran away with the 13-6 victory.

Chad Naf earned the win, while Sawyer Shepherd and Bennet Manley closed the final two innings with an inning of work apiece. The offense was balanced as eight Cougars recorded hits in the game, led by Acosta with 3 RBI and Hinze, Mensen and Panlasigui with 2 RBI respectively.

CCU celebrated seniors Connor Laeng, Ross Panlasigui, Bennett Manley, Jack Cazin, Sawyer Shepherd, Gavin Acosta, William Brassil, Major Maydon and Saxton Sorenson as they sent them out the right way with a series victory over their RMAC rival.
The Cougars will close their season on the road at New Mexico Highlands as they begin the four game series with a doubleheader on May 2 at 1 and 4 p.m. MST.
