CCU Battle Into RMAC Tournament Semifinals with Game One Win Over UCCS

LAKEWOOD, CO- Colorado Christian began play at the RMAC Tournament on Wednesday with an afternoon matchup against five-seeded UCCS at All Star Park. After falling behind 2-0, the Cougars rallied to claim a 5-3 victory to advance to the semifinals on Friday.

The pitching was strong to start as Emma Duncan faced off with the Mountain Lions Autumn Kunze. CCU threatened several times, loading the bases in the third and keeping traffic on the bases the next few innings, but they were unable to cash in on the opportunities. UCCS struck first in the fourth inning as an unfortunate error that wind played a factor in saw two runs scored in consecutive at-bats.

The bottom of the fifth was the moment the Cougars began to catch fire as singles from Elyse McMullin and Rachel Williams set the stage for an RBI single from Danae Lopez. Camryn Quilling followed by bringing in the tying run with another single. Kat Hanson gave her team the lead for good as she slapped a single  to right center as the fifth inning closed with CCU on top 3-2.

The bottom of the sixth was another good one for the hosts as they plated two insurance runs to pad the lead. McMullin doubled home Sarah Dollerschell and Williams singled McMullin home as CCU grew the lead to 5-2. UCCS battled hard and scratched out a run in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough as the #1-seeded Cougars claimed the 5-3 victory.

Duncan delivered another stellar performance in the circle, securing her 19th win of the season as she went the entire seven innings with just one earned run allowed, a strikeout and only one walk issued. A balanced offensive attack saw McMullin, Williams, Quilling, Hanson and Lopez all contribute one RBI apiece.

Colorado Christian will have a well deserved day off Thursday at the tournament as they await the winner of tomorrow morning's MSU Denver vs. Colorado Mesa game in the semifinals that will take place Friday May 2 at 11 a.m. MST.
