DENVER, CO- CCU closed their series at Regis with a Monday finale. The Cougars battled hard, scoring early runs and taking a lead, but the Rangers proved too much on this day in a 16-8 setback.
William Brassil got his team on the board in the first inning as he singled home
Gavin Acosta for the 1-0 lead. The hosts scored three runs in their half of the first, but an RBI fielder's choice from
Lukas Hinze and a two-run double by Mason Hegel-Pitt put CCU back on top 4-3. An error allowed the visitors to plate one more run for a 5-3 lead.
A single run in the second from the Rangers tightened the gap, but again the Cougars responded with more run production. Hinze continued a strong day at the plate with an RBI double in the third, and Hagel-Pitt singled him home for the 7-4 lead. Regis tightened the gap to 7-6 after four innings before they exploded in the fifth. A tough inning for CCU saw Regis tack on 10 runs as they took control with a 16-7 lead, and a single run in the eighth was not enough in a 16-8 defeat.
Chad Naf struck out two in four innings of work, and
Jackson Stahl was strong in relief with 3.2 innings pitched on just two hits and zero earned runs allowed. Hagel-Pitt tallied three RBI and Hinze posted a pair of RBI.
The Cougars will take on MSU Denver on April 11 at 6 p.m. at Assembly Athletic Complex in downtown Denver.
