Cougars Close 2025 Season on a High Note with Doubleheader Sweep at New Mexico Highlands

LAS VEGAS, NM- The Cougars wrapped up the 2025 campaign on Saturday with a doubleheader at New Mexico Highlands. CCU ended the season on a high note, winning six of their final eight games and sweeping the doubleheader against the Cowboys with final scores of 22-9 and 6-3.

GAME ONE
After a pair of runs in the first from the home team, CCU answered with a Gavin Acosta homer to make it 2-1. William Brassil followed as he went yard for a two-run bomb to put his team ahead 3-2. NMHU took the lead back in the third, but the advantage was short-lived.

Acosta singled in another run, and Gregory Rangel hammered a three-run homer to send his team ahead 7-4. A bases-loaded walk of Major Maydon set the stage for home run number two from Brassil as he blasted another two-run homer for the 10-4.

The homer party continued as Acosta and Rangel went back-to-back for the 12-4 advantage. Rangel singled in yet another run and after six innings CCU led 15-9. Three straight doubles from Lukas Hinze, Seth Gustafson and Ross Panlasigui scored five runs, and Rangel closed a historic game as he launched a two-run home run to cap a three-homer day and seal the 22-9 victory.

Chad Naf claimed the victory with 5.2 innings pitched and four strikeouts and Sawyer Shepherd closed things out in the win. Rangel had a career day as the freshman tied the program RBI and home run record for a single game with seven runs batted in and three homers. Acosta and Brassil teed off for two home runs apiece in the dominant effort.

GAME TWO
The second game was a lower scoring affair as the pitching settled in. It was an early surge from the Cougars in the first two innings that sealed the deal for the doubleheader sweep. Rangel continued his torrid day with a two-run homer in the first as he smashed his fourth homer of the day.

Brassil continued in the first by destroying a ball to right field for a two-run shot as CCU jumped ahead 4-0. Acosta made it 6-0 in the second as he uncorked a two-run home run for his third big fly of the day. The Cowboys managed to compile three runs over the course of the game, but the Cougars ended up limiting the runs scored as they closed the season with a 6-3 victory.

Saxton Sorenson closed his excellent career with a complete game victory, going seven innings with seven strikeouts as he claimed the victory. The homers from Rangel, Brassil and Acosta proved all that CCU would need in the seasons' finale.

In year one under Head Coach Andrew Liberty, the Cougars improved upon their win total from last season with an overall record of 12-37 and a mark of 9-23 in RMAC play. The Cougars will look to improve upon the strong close to the year next season in year two under Liberty in 2026.
