Cougars Power Past Westminster on the Road

Salt Lake City, UT- The Cougars hit the road the second weekend in a row, rolling past Westminster for their first away conference win. Josie Grosdidier saw a career game, leading CCU to soar over the Griffins 81-71.

The Cougars came into Salt Lake City ready to roll, starting hot from tip-off. Samantha Wattawa would open up the scoring in the paint for the Cougs, followed by Josie Grosdidier. The Cougar offense was just getting started, as Felix, Johnson, and Heckert would all get on the board, leading Westminster 16-10 six minutes into the quarter. Several fouls and free throws for the Griffins would pull the game close, with both teams splashing a three to finish the quarter. CCU would lead Westminster 21-17 after the first quarter.

The second quarter would be a gritty one for both teams as the affair went back and forth multiple times. Josie Grosdidier would continue to dominate the floor, both in rebounds and points as the Griffins had no answer for her. Johnson and Heckert would both continue in the dogfight, no team leading by more than 5 the entire quarter. Both sides would enter the locker room as the Cougars trailed 36-39.

The third quarter would be a statement quarter for the Cougars, displaying a unified effort that was seemingly unstoppable for the hosts. Josie Grosdidier would continue to add to her total throughout the third to regain the lead, coupled by the efforts of Felix, Johnson, and Heckert. Trailing by 1 point with three minnutes left in the third, an offensive flurry would boost the Cougars to a 7 point lead to enter the final quarter, 66-59. The combined efforts of Grosdidier and Johnson would put up 16 points in the third alone.

There was no looking back for the Cougars as they saw a textbook shutdown quarter. The Cougars would dominate the paint on both ends to grow the lead to 10, while only allowing Westminster 12 points in the final quarter, the same number of points Josie Grosdidier would score that quarter. With the exception of a Hayley Luther three, Josie would be the sole scoring Cougar in the fourth, leading the Cougars to their first conference win on the road, second conference win overall.

Head coach Carissa Ratliff praised the team's resilience and unity following the double digit victory, stating "I'm proud of the continual fight the entire team played with today. They played together with a lot of poise and we had some different players step up in huge ways to help seal the win."

Josie Grosdidier would have an incredible double-double, leading the team with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Jordon Heckert would follow with 17 points, Ja'Shelle Johnson in close pursuit with 14. Samantha Wattawa would notably have 8 rebounds herself.

The Cougars will look to maintain momentum as they travel to match up vs. Western Colorado, tipoff scheduled for 1 PM MST. Now sitting 2-9 in conference, the Cougars will look to make a late season run to push for a final playoff berth. 7-4 in conference and 9-8 overall, Western sits 6th in the RMAC standings as CCU looks to go back to back against the Mountaineers, their first conference win coming against Western at home in December.
