Lakewood, CO – The Cougars hosted the visiting Thunderwolves from Pueblo, CO, suffering their second strait loss to CSU-Pueblo in conference play. After a tightly contested first half, the night saw the Thunderwolves lock down the game in the second half, besting the Cougars 52-62.
With a small, late year roster the Cougars looked to upset CSU-Pueblo at home after a hard loss to the Thunderwolves on the road. The game started slow for both sides as both teams would open up the night with several missed shots.
Elise Grosdidier would open up the scoring, driving to the basket with a quick layup, with an immediate layup response from the Thudnerwolves. The Cougars best scorer on the year,
Jordon Heckert, would open up her night with a bucket from deep, also immediately answered with a three from CSU-Pueblo. Several more buckets would surge CSU-Pueblo forward into the second quarter leading the Cougars 10-15.
Pueblo would continue to pour on the pressure, opening up the lead to 8, forcing the Cougs to fight back. Heckert would score 4 quick points and drain a three-pointer one minute later to single handedly bring the game back to 1 point. Several buckets from Pueblo would see the inspired response of
Hayley Luther and
Samantha Wattawa, both scoring quick buckets, and pushing the Cougars to lead the game going into half, 25-24.
The third quarter would prove a tough one for the Cougars, only scoring 10 points while the Thunderwolves would put up 17. An offensive flurry from the Thunderwolves would put the visitors up 7 3 minutes into the quarter, CCU not able to make any bucket fall.
Jordon Heckert and
Maley Wilhelm would be the only Cougars to score in the third quarter, walking into the final quarter down 35-43.
While the fourth quarter would see a better offensive showing from the home side, CSU-Pueblo would respond with enough energy to shut the game down handedly. Heckert would continue to pour on the points, Heckert and Pueblo's Seneya Martinez going back and forth for the games top scorer. Heckert would score 11 points in the fourth to tie Martinez on the night, both with 29 points. Despite an increased 15 point fourth quarter from CCU, the Thunderwolves would push the lead to 10 to close out the night, the final score 52-62, Thunderwolves over Cougars.
Jordon Heckert would once again shine for the Cougars, leading with 29 points, 4 steals, and 5 rebounds. Heckert would stand alone, the next closest scoring Cougar only having 4 points. The night would see CCU 16% from the beyond the arc and 30% from the field.
