Denver, CO - The Cougars made the short trip to Regis Fieldhouse on Thursday evening and delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, rolling past Regis 89-65.
Ezra Simonich and
Maley Wilhelm lead the charge, each having career nights to cruise past the Rangers.
CCU wasted no time asserting control.
Samantha Wattawa opened the scoring in the paint before the Cougars quickly stretched the lead behind strong defensive pressure and efficient shooting.
Maley Wilhelm sparked an early run with transition buckets, while
Angelina Kohlwaies knocked down a pair of threes to push the margin to double digits. A late jumper from
Jordon Heckert sent the Cougars into the second quarter leading 25-13.
The second quarter saw Regis attempt to claw back into the contest, trimming the lead to single digits midway through the frame. The Cougars weathered the push with timely baskets from
Ezra Simonich and
Josie Grosdidier, entering halftime in control, 38-29.
Out of the break, CCU delivered the decisive blow. Wilhelm opened the third quarter with a three-pointer, igniting a 30-point explosion from the Cougars. Heckert connected from deep, Kohlwaies added another triple, and Simonich dominated both ends of the floor—turning steals into fast break points and finishing efficiently inside. The Cougars shot an impressive 12-of-18 in the quarter, ballooning the lead to 68-49 entering the final frame.
The fourth quarter was the same story, all Cougs. Simonich continued to capitalize in transition, as the Rangers had no answer for her. Luther added a three, and the Cougars pushed the advantage to as many as 31 points. CCU finished the night shooting 55% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc, while forcing 18 turnovers and converting 29 points off those mistakes.
Four Cougars reached double figures. Wilhelm led the way with 21 points, adding four assists and two steals. Simonich served as the playmaker, scoring 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds and 7 steals in a commanding all-around performance. Heckert and Kohlwaies each added 11 points, with Luther chipping in 10. The bench contributed 33 points in the victory.
Now 7-18 overall and 4-13 in RMAC play, the Cougars will look to carry the momentum forward as they prepare for their next conference matchup, continuing their push through the final stretch of the regular season. CCU will travel back to Denver, competing against MSU-Denver in their final away game of the season, tip-off set for Saturday, February 21
st at 1pm.
