Cougars Fall in Final Contest of the Season

The Cougars played their last game of the season Saturday afternoon, hosting the visiting Fort Lewis Skyhawks. An offensive showcase from the Skyhawks proved too much for the Cougars, falling 58-85.

The final competition of the year celebrated seniors Jordon Heckert and Samantha Wattawa, two consistent bright spots for the Cougars this season. Both seniors have left their mark, Jordon Heckert the 12th most scoring player and 21st most rebounds in the RMAC, and Samantha Wattawa with the 22nd most rebounds amongst the RMAC.

Senior day got started quick, Jordon Heckert converting a layup in the lanejust 5 seconds off tip-off. Fort Lewis would respond strongly in the paint with a quick 6 points, before Elise Grosdidier would calmly splash a three-pointer to bring the game within one. The Cougars and Skyhawks would trade buckets shot for shot pushing into the first, neither team able to truly pull away. The Skyhawks would get hot, scoring a couple of threes and several jumpers in the final minutes of the first to lead the Cougars 22-15 at the end of the first.

The second half saw a fight from the Cougars, but an even more clinical performance from the Skyhawks. Precision from outside the arc and offensive boards in the lane would suffocate any surge the Cougars could find, handedly increasing the Skyhawks lead. The combines of Heckert in the field and Simonich finding boards off the glass would slowly drive the Cougars forward, the Cougs going into half losing 27-44.

The third quarter would remain all Skyhawks, continuing to put the pressure on CCU while increasing the deficit. Ezra Simonich would prove a bright spot for the Cougars, putting in work both ends on the court as she fought to scratch a way back into the game. The third quarter would see the Skyhawks go up 28, teams entering the final quarter 40-68.

The final quarter would see a stalemate on both sides, with the Cougars unable to chip into the hefty lead from the visitors. Samantha Wattawa would finish her career with heart, scoring 8 points of her own in the fourth. The clock would wind down to 0, the Cougars losing 58-85.

The seniors would lead the way on the night, Heckert leading the team with 13 points, 4 boards and 4 assists, with Wattawa close behind scoring 12 points with 6 boards and 2 assists. Ezra Simonich would be on the only other Cougar to score in double digits with 11 points. The Cougars would go 41% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc.
The Cougars ended the season 7-21, 4-16 in conference and 13th in the conference. A young team, the Cougars have a lot of exciting players to build on as they look towards next year to make a mark in the RMAC.
