Lakewood, CO – Thursday night saw the long awaited return home for the Cougars, as they would steamroll the visiting Eagles from Chadron State. With 10 different girls on the scoresheet, CCU rolled to a 41 point victory, beating Chadron 84-43.
Returning home for the first time in nearly three weeks, the Cougars didn't need long to separate themselves from the visiting Eagles. Chadron would score the first points of the game with a jumper in the paint, which would be their only lead of the night.
Maley Wilhelm would respond with a quick two points, immediately coupled with a
Jordon Heckert layup. There was no looking back for the Cougars. Heckert would score another 4 points before
Ezra Simonich would start her tear with a layup, unstoppable throughout the night. The first quarter ended 12-9 in favor of CCU.
Elise Grosdidier, a steady scorer for the Cougars, would open up the second quarter with an excellent drive in the paint. Grosdidier would score the first 6 points of the quarter for CCU, before
Jordon Heckert would score the next 5. A defensive masterclass from the Cougars saw 2 blocks in the quarter, the Cougars shutting down the Eagles. The Cougars would enter halftime with a 21 point lead over Chadron, 44-23.
Each quarter would be more and more CCU, the Cougars not letting up through the entirety of the second half. Heckert and Wilhelm would continue to increase the margin of victory for the Cougars early in the quarter, not giving any buckets on the other end as Wilhelm would give the Cougars yet another block. The stifling defense and critical offense would see the Cougars enter the final quarter up 64-30.
The fourth quarter would open up all
Ezra Simonich, closing out a career night on both ends of the court. The end of the night would see yet another block, as the Cougars defense would force play after play their way. The Cougars would only allow 9 points in the final quarter, scoring 18 of their own to close out the game 84-43. This would be the largest margin of victory in conference for the Cougars, handing the Eagles their 12
th conference loss.
Ezra Simonich would have a team leading 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Heckert and Wilhelm would follow with 17 & 10 points respectively, 10 different girls getting on the scoresheet, and 43 points coming off the bench.
