Cougars Roll Past Eagles to Secure Series Sweep

CHADRON, NE- The Cougars closed their series at Chadron State on Saturday with another doubleheader against the Eagles. Powered by strong offense and quality pitching once again, CCU swept the series to run their win streak to 30 games with victories of 6-3 and 7-0.

GAME ONE
Paisley Williamson got the scoring started in the second with an RBI single to plate Leah Garcia, and Kat Hanson followed with a sac fly to make it 2-0. Felesha LePenske crossed home plate in the third on a wild pitch, and Williamson scored in the fourth on a double steal.

Hanson eventually made it 5-0 with her second sac fly of the game in the fourth, but Chadron State would not go down without a fight, rallying for three runs in the sixth to cut the gap to 5-3. An important insurance run scored in the seventh as Maya Schroeder came home on a passed ball, and the Eagles would bring the winning run to the plate in the final frame with the bases loaded before a flyout to right field ended the contest in favor of CCU 6-3.

LePenske notched the win with 5.0 innings pitched, while Hanna Espinoza picked up the save with 2.0 innings tossed to secure the win for her team. The Cougars capitalized on several Eagles miscues, while Hanson notched a pair of RBI.

GAME TWO
It was a lower scoring affair for the first few innings of game two as neither team got anything going offensively. CCU broke through in the third as Hanson singled home Peyton Marvel and Elyse McMullin singled Hanson in for the 2-0 advantage.

McMullin was in the circle in the series finale, and she kept the Eagles bats quiet throughout. Schroeder singled in another run in the fourth, and the fifth saw Sarah Dollerschell cross home plate on an error for the 4-0 lead.

LePenske singled home one more in the fifth before Garcia put the finishing touches on the victory with a two-run homer to center field to seal the 7-0 shutout victory, their 30th straight.

McMullin went the full 7.0 innings, striking out six and scattering five hits with no runs allowed to improve to 7-0 on the season and lower her ERA to an impressive 1.29. Five different players notched an RBI, led by two from Garcia on her fifth inning blast.

Now 24-0 in RMAC competition, the Cougars will return home to welcome crosstown rival MSU Denver April 2-3 at All Star Park with game times set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MDT both days.
