More History Made on Sunday as CCU Sweep Black Hills State

SPEARFISH, SD- For the second straight day, history was achieved against Black Hills State in a doubleheader sweep of the hosts. With a comeback 6-4 game one victory and a run-rule 11-1 win in game two, the Cougars broke the RMAC record for most wins in a row with 38, breaking the previous record held by the 2018 Colorado Mesa squad.

GAME ONE
Game one of the day began as a pitching duel as neither team scored through the first three innings of play. A pair of homers from Black Hills State sent them to a 4-0 lead after four innings as the Cougars found themselves in danger of dropping their first game in over two months.

Down to their final out in the sixth, CCU showed why they are such a hard team to beat and hold a perfect record in conference play. Kat Hanson ripped an RBI single through the right side, and Elyse McMullin came up huge with a two-run homer way over the right field fence. Arriana Wright followed with a solo bomb, and Felesha LePenske made it three homers in a row as she sent a ball to left center as suddenly the game stood tied at 4-4.

With the momentum swinging their way, Peyton Marvel and Paisley Williamson got on base via an infield single and walk. A sac bunt from Sarah Dollerschell advanced the runners to second and third, and a costly error from Black Hills allowed both to score and send CCU ahead 6-4. The hosts tried to rally, getting a runner to third in the final frame, but Hanna Espinoza slammed the door with a fly out to seal the exhilarating comeback win.

Espinoza picked up her sixth win of the year as she relieved LePenske after she put in 5.1 innings of work. The final 1.2 innings proved pivotal as Hanna allowed just one hit en route to the victory. For the second time this season, the Cougar offense saw three hitters in a row blast homers, with the trio today coming at the most crucial time of the game to rally the team to victory.

GAME TWO
The Cougars kept the bats hot to start the series finale as Wright singled in a run in the first for a 1-0 lead. BHSU responded in the third to tie the game before a massive fourth and fifth inning put things out of reach.

Marvel got a hold of a ball and sent it out of the park for a two-run homer in the fourth, and Williamson later scored on a wild pitch to send CCU ahead 4-1. Maya Schroeder picked up an RBI single in the fifth, and Marvel kept the runs coming with a base knock to plate another run.

A bases-loaded walk of McMullin made it 7-1 before Wright delivered the decisive blow. The senior stepped into the batter's box and watched a ball go by before she found a pitch she liked and promptly launched a grand slam over the center field fence to break the game wide open at 11-1. CCU closed the fifth to claim the mercy-rule win and sweep the Yellow Jackets in their four-game set.

The victory gave the Cougars their 38th straight win, a new RMAC record for wins in a row by any team in the conference. McMullin cruised to the win, striking out one and scattering 4 hits with just one run allowed for her 8th victory of the season. Wright had a monster 5 RBI game to send her team to the dominant mercy-rule victory.

Riding the longest win streak in program history, the Cougars will look to keep things rolling when they visit Colorado Mesa for a four-game set April 18-19 in Grand Junction.
