LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars celebrated their two seniors
Leah Garcia and
Arriana Wright on Saturday as they took on Adams State in another doubleheader. CCU sent their seniors out the right way, claiming run-rule victories of identical 9-1 scorelines to run their win streak to 46 games and reach the 50 win mark on the season.
GAME ONE
The Grizzlies scored first with a run in the first inning, but that was all they would get the entirety of the contest. Wright began her teams' response with an RBI single, and fellow senior Garcia ripped a two-run double to make it 3-1.
Peyton Marvel singled home Garcia, and
Paisley Williamson picked up an RBI single as CCU led 5-1 after one inning of play.
Garcia continued her excellent day with a rare feat, roping a ball to left center field. The ball caromed off the fence and took a bounce away from the centerfielder, and Garcia showed off her speed as she raced all the way home for an inside the park home run. Wright and
Elyse McMullin were on base and also scored as the lead grew to 8-1.
Kat Hanson put the finishing touches on the victory with an RBI single in the sixth to mercy-rule the Grizzlies 9-1.
Felesha LePenske snagged her 20th win with 3.0 innings pitched and 5 strikeouts, while
Lisa Liddell and
Hanna Espinoza closed the final 3.0 innings out in the run-rule win. Garcia was the offensive catalyst with 5 RBI on a double and inside the park homer.
GAME TWO
Garcia continued her torrid day with an RBI single in the first, and
Maya Schroeder singled home two more for the 3-0 lead. The ball began to fly out of the park in the second, beginning with a
Sarah Dollerschell solo home run to left center.
Wright continued the power surge with a no-doubter to left field, obliterating a ball well over the fence for a two-run homer to send her team ahead 6-0. The final runs for the Cougars came across in the fourth as LePenske smashed a two RBI double to make it 8-0. Garcia picked up one more extra base hit with a run scoring double to grow the lead to 9-0. That insurance proved crucial as the Grizzlies scratched a run across in the fifth, but the Cougars ended it after five for the 9-1 victory.
McMullin got the win in the circle, throwing 4.0 innings with 6 strikeouts and just two hits allowed with no runs. Espinoza picked up the first two outs in the fifth before a cool moment occurred. The senior Wright stepped into the circle tasked with picking up the final out, and with a runner in scoring position she induced a lineout to third to seal the game in the perfect way. A balanced offensive attack saw Garcia, Wright, LePenske and Schroeder all have 2 RBI apiece to power their team to victory.
With hosting rights for the RMAC Tournament already clinched, the Cougars will look to complete a perfect season in conference play when they close the regular season at CSU Pueblo April 30-May 1.
