LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars took on CSU Pueblo on Saturday as they competed in their sixth straight RMAC Tournament Title game. After the teams traded punches to sit level at 2-2 through three innings, a tough fourth inning gave the ThunderWolves the lead for good as they took down CCU 8-2 to claim the title.
CSUP came out hot, scoring two runs in the first on a single. The Cougars responded immediately as
Arriana Wright uncorked a massive two-run homer to center field to level the score at 2-2. Neither team scored the next two innings as the pitching began to settle into the game.
A disastrous top of the fourth for the Cougars was the difference in the game as they committed an uncharacteristic three errors that CSU Pueblo took advantage of to plate six runs and take an 8-2 lead. The Cougars threatened to score in the fifth with runners on second and third with just one out, but they could not take advantage and score any runs in the inning. They got a pair of singles in the sixth, but once again nothing came of it. The Cougars could not plate any more runs in the final frame as they fell 8-2 to the ThunderWolves.
Elyse McMullin took her first loss of the season in the circle, striking out 3 in 3.1 innings of work. Wright tied the programs' single season home run record with her 18th of the year in the first inning, matching assistant coach
Kenzie Liberty's mark she achieved in 2024. Wright, McMullin and
Felesha LePenske were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts at the championships.
The Cougars will now see if they will be hosting an NCAA Regional when the selection show airs live on NCAA.com on Monday, May 11 at 8 a.m. MDT.
