They trailed for almost all of Saturday night's game against Palm Beach Atlantic, but CCU Women's Basketball never stopped fighting. Showing a famous Cougar grit and tenacity, Colorado Christian dug deep in the closing minutes of the contest, pulling to within two before finally falling 68-64 to the visiting Sailfish. The loss drops CCU to 0-2 on the young season.
Â
Though two-straight set-backs make for a hard pill to swallow, the blue and gold did plenty well in 2014's opening weekend. Against PBA, the Christian squad turned in another solid showing in the paint – scoring 30 under the basket and bringing down 37 boards. Bigs
Ali Meyer and
Claire Paxton helped anchor CCU's inside game, combining for 21 points, 17 boards, and five blocks.
Â
Getting the job done from the back court was junior guard
Taylor Torres, who took control of the Cougar offense late in the game to ignite a spark that would put the game well within reach. Though she had just five points at the half, Torres erupted in the second with five treys and a 17-point effort.
Â
Unfortunately, though CCU matched nearly every PBA effort, the Sailfish won the game at the line. The visitors took 30 shots from the charity stripe, draining 18. Colorado Christian, conversely, got to the free throw line just 12 times, scoring ten thanks in part to a 4-for-4 Torres showing.
Â
The Cougars were also stung by 23 turnovers.
Â
Opening weekend nerves now hopefully out of the way, the shorthanded Christian squad will move their search for the first win of 2014-15 to the road. The Cougars will travel north for a handful of Thanksgiving break games, starting with their road opener at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada. CCU will follow that up with a trio of games at University of Alaska Fairbanks.
