For 86 minutes on Sunday, it seemed as though CCU Soccer would close out their season winless and scoreless in the RMAC. Fortunately, the Cougars have talented seniors on their squad. Those seniors took advantage of timely opportunities on senior day to change the fate of the season, giving Colorado Christian a 2-1 win over Western State at Trailblazer.
Â
Though WSCU managed just three shots on goal in the matinee, the Mountaineer squad managed to slip one past Christian keeper
Haley Lowe at the 54:05 mark in the second period. Western played with the lead for most of the period, eyeing the win with less than four minutes left on the clock.
Â
Unfortunately for the visitors from Gunnison, a critical late-game red card would completely change the complexion of the match. Nabbed for goalie interference, the Mountaineers found themselves on the unlucky end of a penalty kick – one which senior
Danielle Gershon would drill past the back-up Western keeper. The goal neutralized the WSCU lead, and left both teams battling to get the victory.
Â
"It was going to be the last ten minutes of my soccer career," explained Gershon. "I told myself to just have fun and leave it all on the field. Thanks to the relentless effort of my team I was able to have an opportunity to score! I'm really glad I was able to finish that opportunity."
Â
Now working against a short-handed squad, the Cougars saw their chance. With only seconds left on the clock, senior
Sally Larsen crossed the ball into the box, finding senior
Rachael Berberovich for a shot that found the bottom right corner of the Western goal.
Â
"I wanted to play without any regrets today," remarked Berberovich after the win. "When I saw the ball coming towards me I had a feeling it was going to go over
Tristyn Hall's head. It bounced to me, I took a breath and told myself I was scoring this one and it went in."
Â
Coach
Renee Lopez shared her player's excitement.
"It was extremely exciting to see our girls battle for 90 minutes and finally get the results that we hadn't this year in the RMAC. The fact that the goals and assists came from seniors just made this more of a storybook finish. I'm so proud of how they finished this game."
Â
Colorado Christian wraps the regular season with a 4-11-3 overall record. They'll turn their focus now to the NCCAA Central Region Tournament.
