Colorado Christian Basketball dropped their second exhibition game in less than a week, falling 93-58 to NCAA DI Northern Colorado Monday in Greely.
Yet unable to put together a pair of strong halves, CCU came out hot to open the game but then chilled significantly after the break. A 45% effort – including 8-for-19 shooting from downtown – in the opening period had the Cougars on top of the home Bears throughout much of the half. Unfortunately, UNC launched a 20-7 run to take a 38-32 lead into halftime.
"For the first 25 minutes or so, I felt like we accomplished some good things and addressed some areas we were hoping to sharpen up," explained CCU Coach
Kevin Lubbers. "We still have a long way to go."
Though the Bears' first-half run looked good, UNC fared just as well in the second. Behind an impressive 57% clip, the home team drained 16 buckets – seven of them treys – to close the game. Colorado Christian, meanwhile, struggled once again to find the bottom of the net. The Cougars hit a season-low six field goals in the final 20 minutes, and proved paralytic from behind the arc in an 0-for-9 showing.
Tyler Shields led the CCU offense Monday, scoring a season-high 17 points after hitting three times from deep.
Wayne McCullough added ten in addition to a game-best seven rebounds. Though they outscored CCU 32-10 in the paint, the Bears only out-rebounded Colorado Christian by one (34-33).
Now six games into the 2014-15 campaign, the Cougars will return to Lakewood to open their home season with a pair of games against Johnson & Wales and Bethany College Friday and Saturday.
