Colorado Christian Basketball led for 21 minutes Saturday night, in front 31-20 at the break, but the road-weary Cougars could not hold on as the late moments of the game slipped away. CCU lost the contest to Alaska Fairbanks, falling 66-63 to drop to 0-6 on the season.
Â
Christian took their first lead at the 10:38 mark of the first half, when senior
Kayla Fakelman connected in the paint on a dish from teammate
Taylor Torres. The visiting Cougar squad led for the rest of the period, taking their largest lead into the half.
Â
Though CCU would sit on top for much of the second period, the home Nanooks launched an 18-4 run from 12:45 to 6:15 to take over the coveted lead. Silenced and lacking in momentum, Colorado Christian had little left to respond with even though the game was never really out of reach. Critical misses in the closing minutes crippled CCU and left them winless at the week's North Star Invitational.
Â
Kate Louthan and Cougar scoring leader
Claire Paxton paced the Christian attack, scoring 16 apiece in a 40% CCU effort. Paxton led CCU across the line, tallying a game-best 14 boards to go along with seven assists and three blocks. The blue and gold won the battle on the glass again, bringing down 45 rebounds compared to 40 from UAF.
Â
The Fairbanks squad benefited from a 17-for-23 effort from the line. CCU managed to score just ten points on 16 tries at the charity stripe.
Â
Already headed home from Alaska, the Cougars will turn their attention to an upcoming RMAC schedule which begins with two grueling road contests. Christian will play at New Mexico Highlands Friday, before traveling to Silver City, NM to play Western New Mexico on Saturday.
