Colorado Christian Women's Basketball had another tough night Friday, falling 78-70 in an injury-ridden contest at New Mexico Highlands University. The loss drops the Cougars to 0-7 on the year, and leaves an already short-handed CCU squad limping to start the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season.
Â
A tightly contested pairing from the opening horn, the game featured 14 lead-changes and 11 ties. Unfortunately, NMHU tipped the scales in their favor by taking advantage of 15 CCU turnovers and winning the battle under the basket. The home Cowgirls led the game for 25 minutes, securing the win despite a 36-36 halftime tie.
Â
Junior guard
Taylor Torres led all scorers in the loss, notching 19 points thanks to a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the line and three makes from behind the arc.
Claire Paxton and
Kate Louthan also turned in double-digit showings, scoring 15 and 12 respectively. Paxton also tallied a team-high seven rebounds, while Torres accounted for four of Christian's 17 assists.
Â
Though the Cougars wrapped the night with better numbers from the field (44%) and from three-point range (41%), Highlands managed better execution at the charity stripe.
Â
Still looking for their first win, the Colorado Christian squad will travel to Silver City to take on Western New Mexico Saturday at 5:30 pm.
