CCU Basketball kicked off the 2014-15 RMAC season with a tough road trip, but that didn't stop the Cougars from playing a solid game at the John A. Wilson Complex in Las Vegas, NM. The Christian squad turned in another stout defensive effort to earn a 77-66 win over New Mexico Highlands.
Â
CCU led the home Cowboys for almost 40 minutes, jumping out to a 16-point advantage midway through the opening half thanks to a blazing 52% showing from the field. Christian took a 38-29 cushion into the break – and used that lead stave off late NMHU runs. Though the Highlands squad eventually matched CCU's makes from the field, they couldn't account for a 21-for-29 Colorado Christian effort from the line. The Cowboys made just eight free shots.
Â
CCU's well-rounded effort had all ten players score, with three –
Michael Brown,
Andrew Squiers, and
Joey Trinkle – in double digits. Brown finished the night with 18 points, while Squiers added 16. The two also combined for nine boards and four assists.
Wayne McCullough led all players with nine rebounds, while Trinkle notched a game-best four blocks in addition to 11 points.
Â
"This was a great way to start conference play," said CCU Coach
Kevin Lubbers after the game. "I thought our defense was solid and we did enough offensively to get the win."
Â
While the Cowboys remain winless on the year, Colorado Christian jumps ahead with a 4-3 overall record. They'll travel six hours south to take on the winless Mustangs of Western New Mexico.
