Colorado Christian University Volleyball was just one set-win away from a dominating Homecoming win over Metro State Saturday, but the home Cougars stalled in the game's third set. Using an enormous shift of momentum, the Roadrunners snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, winning the final three of the five-set match and handing CCU their second straight lossÂ
It took several points for the blue and gold to get warmed up, but the home team ignited early in the opening set. CCU responded to a 5-0 deficit with an impressively aggressive effort that had Metro's passers and hitters on their heels for the next two games. The Christian squad notched a statement seven blocks in set one, flexing their dominance at the net to a packed Event Center crowd.Â
Unfortunately, the RMAC's fourth-ranked Runners collected their composure during the break.Â
A better effort in the back row helped Metro State find their groove in the third, and the visitors collected on the benefits by way of a potent attack that tipped the scales in their favor. With momentum soon heavily in their favor, the MSU squad gripped the reigns and never let up. The result was Colorado Christian's second five-set loss in just a week.
Connie Olson and
Kaylee Pierce led the CCU offense, combining for 23 kills and just seven errors in CCU's .164 effort. Defensively, middle
Sophia Proano and
Joelle LeFevre made the statements with five blocks and 21 kills, respectively. Setter
Jordan Carswell tallied a team-best 29 assists to go along with two aces, five kills, and 12 digs.Â
Now 9-8 on the season and 4-4 in RMAC play, the Cougars will chase wins in the coming week with a pair of matches scheduled at Colorado Mines on Friday and Regis University on Saturday.
