The Cougars and Colorado Mesa faced off on Saturday night but were defeated by a final score of 91-82. In what turned out to be an offensive battle, Colorado Christian fought hard to keep things close, but in the end it was the outside shooting from Mesa that earned them the victory.
Â
The start of the game was not ideal for CCU as they watched Mesa build an early double digit lead. CMU simply could not miss from the field early on and just ten minutes into the game they were leading by 22 points. The Cougars attempted to claw their way back into the game and had cut the Maverick lead down to 16 at the half.
Â
CCU came out after halftime determined to give their home crowd something to cheer about. Senior
Wayne McCullough put on an offensive show in the second half and was able to bring the team back into the game. McCullough scored 20 of his game high 27 points in the second half as he and the rest of the CCU squad cut the Maverick lead down to six points late in the second half. However time ran out on the comeback attempt as CMU was able to hit some free throws late in the game to secure their 91-82 victory.
Â
Wayne McCullough led the way for CCU as he got a double-double on the night with 27 points and 11 rebounds. He shot 8-13 from the floor and hit 5-8 from beyond the three point line.
Ty McGee also had a good game as he had 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Dominique Josephs made good use of his 16 minutes of play as he scored ten points. Josephs also grabbed five rebounds, four of them on the offensive glass which led to second chance points for the team.
Â
With the loss, the Cougars have now dropped five straight games heading into the Christmas break. They will be back in action on New Year's Day when they travel down to New Mexico to face off against New Mexico Highlands University. Tip is scheduled for 7PM MST.
