Colorado Christian Women's Basketball returned to their winning ways after a pair of tough road losses last week. Back in action Friday night at Chadron State, CCU defeated the Eagles 54-42 to earn their eleventh RMAC win.
Â
Leading the way for the Cougars was
Claire Paxton. The sophomore forward was an impact player on both ends of the floor. Paxton tallied 13 points, while grabbing six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Â
Senior
Christina Whitelaw continued to make her presence known, finishing the night with a game-best 12 rebounds to go along with nine points, three assists and two steals.
Â
Taylor Torres, the other CCU player in double figures scoring, finished with ten off the bench, knocking down the Cougars' two shots from the perimeter.
Â
"We came into the week off of a rough weekend, ready to work hard and put that behind us," commented senior
Kayla Fakelman. "We had a great week of practice and understood that getting a win on the road was going to be important."
Â
On a night when offense was at a premium, CCU dialed up their defense to get the much-needed win. Christian totaled 13 steals as part of the 21 forced CSC turnovers, blocked six shots, and held the Eagles to an anemic shooting night. Chadron made just 11 total field goals on 22% shooting, going 0-10 from beyond the arc.
Â
"I felt like we really got back to our fundamentals defensively tonight. We also held our composure a lot better down the stretch," remarked Head Coach
Tim Hays. "We are learning and growing together more each week. I believe we have not reached our potential and our best is yet to come."
Â
Despite the frustration that came from last weekend's set of games, Friday's win gets Christian to fourth in the conference with a crucial matchup looming tomorrow. CCU travels to South Dakota to face Black Hills State at 4 PM. Â The Yellow Jackets are currently just a half game back of the Cougars in the RMAC standings.
