A disappointing loss started Colorado Christian's afternoon, but they made sure to end the day on a high note.
Â
After being handcuffed in game one, Christian responded with an offensive explosion to split the Saturday doubleheader. A 1-0 loss, followed by a 13-4 win against previously unbeaten University of Tampa team meant the Cougars would return to Colorado with a much needed win.
Â
A first inning RBI single by UT would be all that the host Spartans would need in the early affair, as the one run held for the remainder of the game with the Cougars looking overmatched at the plate.
Â
Singles by
Sarah Rasmussen and
Kristina Billante came in the first and seventh innings, respectively, but CCU was held hitless in the other frames, going down on strikes on 13 occasions. Â
Â
Christian pitcher
Katie Edison (0-4) was more than solid in the day's opener but was unlucky to square off against her Tampa counterpart equal to the task. Edison allowed just five hits over six innings, striking out two while walking a single batter. Edison's lone run allowed would be unearned after a previous CCU error in the first inning.
Â
It was a different Cougar team in game two, however, and the bats that had been silent earlier in the day came alive.
Â
Christian pounded out 17 hits in the contest, with
Michaela Barr leading the team with four. Three others had three-hit efforts, including junior
Stephanie Tatham who knocked in a game-high four runs. Also doing damage was freshman
Letty Valenzuela. The Las Vegas native cracked a two-run double in the fifth on her way to a 3-RBI day.
Â
In addition to the welcome offensive production, the blue and gold got a huge contribution from starting pitcher
Tana Feiner. Collecting the first win of her career, the freshman scattered nine hits and allowed four runs in her seven innings of work. After two runs crossed the plate in the first inning, Feiner settled in to only allow two more in the final six.
Â
While the victory got CCU back in the win column after a seven game skid, the confidence that comes from the type of win it was could be even more beneficial. After a long stretch of play in Florida, Christian returns home to begin RMAC play next weekend. A four-game set against Metro State begins Saturday, February 21.
