Colorado Christian hung tight for much of the game, but #11 Metro State pulled away in the second half to notch an 88-70 win over the Cougars Saturday night.
Â
Trying to score an upset, as well as avenge a close loss to MSU in January, CCU fought hard and gave the Roadrunners all they could handle for 30 minutes at the Auraria Event Center. It wasn't until a late run by Metro gave the hosts breathing room and some separation from a Cougars squad desperate for a signature win.
Â
Christian trailed by just three going into the break, using a 3-point barrage- 8 for 15 in the opening period- to stay within striking distance.
Â
The second half was not as kind to the Cougars, however. The weapon that was the three-pointer in the first half betrayed them in the second, and a 17-6 run by Metro under ten minutes to play was a back-breaker in sending CCU to an eighth RMAC defeat.
Â
Freshman
Zach McLemore, coming on as a reserve, knocked down three shots from beyond the arc and paced Christian with 17 points.
Â
Wayne McCullough continued his string of impressive performances with 16 points and 4-7 shooting from outside. The junior from Hockley, TX also registered a pair of steals and blocks.
Michael Brown contributed ten points and
Tyler Shields added team-highs with six rebounds and four assists but the efforts would fall short.
Â
Metro's tandem of Mitch McCarron and Nicholas Kay proved too much to handle, as the pair combined for 60 of the team's 88 points.
Â
The Cougars remain on the road for another week, traveling to Chadron and Black Hills State next weekend with their eyes on a pair of wins against teams currently below them in the RMAC standings.
